March 12, 1996 - Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf of the Denver Nuggets, formerly Chris Jackson, was suspended without pay by the NBA after refusing to stand during the national anthem before games. A compromise was reached when he said he would stand and pray during the anthem; the flag, he said, was a “symbol of tyranny and oppression” and thus his Muslim faith would not allow him to pay respect to it. Chamberlain still owns six of the top ten scoring performances in NBA history.
